Vibroacoustic Therapy

Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT) is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that uses low-frequency sound vibrations to support relaxation, nervous system regulation, and physical recovery. Delivered through a specially designed mat, chair, or treatment bed, these therapeutic vibrations travel directly through the body’s tissues while calming music or tones play simultaneously, creating a deeply immersive sensory experience.
Originally developed in the 1980s by Norwegian researcher Olav Skille, vibroacoustic therapy sits at the intersection of sound therapy, music therapy, and physical rehabilitation. Unlike sound baths or meditation music, VAT works not only through what you hear, but through vibrations that are physically felt throughout the body. This allows the therapy to influence muscles, circulation, the nervous system, and potentially cellular function in a direct and measurable way.
VAT typically uses low-frequency sound waves between 30–120 Hz, which are delivered through embedded transducers in the treatment surface. These frequencies create gentle vibrations that interact with the body’s tissues, helping reduce muscle tension, calm the stress response, and encourage a shift into the parasympathetic nervous system — the body’s natural “rest and recover” state.
This therapy is increasingly used in chronic pain management, neurological rehabilitation, mental health support, and palliative care, particularly for individuals who may find touch-based therapies overwhelming or difficult to tolerate. Because treatment is fully passive and requires no physical effort, it can also be highly accessible for people with limited mobility, fatigue, or sensory sensitivities.
